Where Are We Today

Our
Route Day Five
Waking
up this morning to clear skies, no wind but a chilly 15F, we read a few blogs,
ate breakfast, showered and packed up. Before hooking up, I drove down the road
a 1/4 of a mile and fueled up. Wasn't long and we were hitched and "On Our
Way" by 8:35 a.m. M/T.
Getting fuel first thing |
By
9:30a.m. we could see the mountains on the horizon and by 10: 35 a.m. we had
climbed to 7521 ft into Denver Co. Hwy I 76 ended ( my rating for this hwy
today is a 7.5 out of 10) and we were now on Hwy I 70 climbing into the mountains
topping out at 11063 ft before starting the long road down. There were some
long 7% downgrade where trucks had to use low gear and travel at no more than
45 mph. There were three tunnels thru the mountains, one of them being 1.6
miles long and magnificent scenery.
We
were needing fuel, and there are no large truck stops to pull into. Took a
chance and got off at Silverthorne and finally found a spot I could get into,
barely, and got fuel. For a few minutes, I thought I was going to have to drop
the trailer and go to a station to fuel up.

Back
on the road again we found a REST AREA a hour or so later where we stopped for
lunch. Continuing on to our destination of Grand Junction we spotted a State
Park, James M Robb River Islands, and decided to stay here for the night. It is
about 25 miles before Grand Junction, a nice park with great camp sites with
full hook ups and scenery, while worth the $35.00 for the night.

So,
that is where we are as I write this post, a beautiful spot at 4938 ft and 64
F. I think we picked a good year, and days to take this route. We were so lucky
that by the time we got into the mountains at Denver, that the little skiff of
snow they received over night was gone and the roads were dry.
One
last thing, my rating for Hwy I 70 for today is a 8 out of 10.
Until
the next time, take care and be safe. Love to read your comments. For more on

Glad you made it safely over the mountains there and you did well with the weather as well, Now to enjoy some National Parks. If you go to a few the yearly pass is a good idea.
